No independent survey publishes fractional CMO rates. A transparent way to estimate one is days per week × a published interim day rate. Using 2025–2026 averages of about €940 to €1,080 a day for the Netherlands and Europe, one day a week works out at roughly €4,100 to €4,700 a month, and three days at €12,200 to €14,000. These are illustrative market ranges based on published interim day rates, not a quote.
This guide is for founders, CEOs and CROs of B2B tech and SaaS companies who are weighing a fractional CMO or a fractional head of growth and want a realistic budget before the first call. It shows the sources, the method and its limits, so you can redo the sum with your own numbers.
How is a fractional CMO usually priced?
Most fractional marketing leaders use one of three models:
- Day rate. You pay for each day worked. Simple to compare, but it rewards time spent rather than outcomes, and costs move with the workload.
- Monthly retainer. A fixed monthly fee for an agreed number of days a week and an agreed scope. This is the most common model for ongoing fractional work, because both sides can plan.
- Project fee. A fixed fee for a defined piece of work, such as a go-to-market plan or a demand generation build-out. Useful when the outcome is clear and time-bound.
A retainer is usually built from a day rate and a number of days, which is why published day rates are a reasonable starting point for an estimate.
What do interim executives charge per day in the Netherlands and Europe?
There is no independent survey of fractional CMO rates. The closest published benchmarks are surveys of interim managers: senior executives who take on temporary leadership roles. Three recent sources give usable averages.
| Source | Figure | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| INIMA, The 2026 European Survey | €985 average day rate, down 0.9% on the year before | About 850 interim managers in 10 European markets, members of national interim associations; 2025 data. The Netherlands is not one of the 10 markets. |
| Knab, Zzp Uurtarievenboekje 2026 | €117 average hourly rate for a freelance interim manager (not IT) in the Netherlands | Based on research among more than 20,000 Dutch freelancers. |
| EO Executives, Interim Management Report 2025 | €1,075.83 average day rate in the Netherlands | Survey of 1,671 interim managers, December 2024 to January 2025, by an interim management provider based in Germany. |
INIMA is the most independent of the three: it has no commercial sponsor and draws only on members of national interim associations. Knab is the only source focused on the Dutch freelance market. EO Executives is the only one with a Dutch day rate, but it is published by a company that places interim managers, so treat it as a secondary reference.
What does that mean per month at one, two or three days a week?
Monthly fee ≈ days per week × day rate × 4.33 weeks a month (52 weeks ÷ 12). Rounded to the nearest €100.
| Days a week | Knab 2026 (hourly rate × 8, our conversion): €936/day | INIMA 2026 (Europe): €985/day | EO Executives, 2025 edition (survey Dec 2024–Jan 2025), Netherlands: €1,076/day |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | ~€4,100 a month | ~€4,300 a month | ~€4,700 a month |
| 2 | ~€8,100 a month | ~€8,500 a month | ~€9,300 a month |
| 3 | ~€12,200 a month | ~€12,800 a month | ~€14,000 a month |
Illustrative, based on Knab (2026), INIMA (2026) and EO Executives (2025 edition). These are market averages, not the fee of any individual advisor. INIMA reports day rates net of expenses and VAT, and Knab reports hourly rates excluding VAT; EO Executives does not state whether its rates include VAT.
How this estimate works, and its limits
The estimate multiplies a published interim day rate by the number of days a week and the average number of weeks in a month. That keeps it transparent, but it has clear limits. All three sources are averages across every interim function, not marketing leaders specifically: marketing is only about 3% of EO Executives' respondents and is not among INIMA's top five functions. INIMA has no figure for the Netherlands, and itself notes that its average "had limited practical meaning because there was no 'average interim'". The Knab day rate is our conversion of an hourly rate at 8 hours a day. EO Executives is published by an interim provider. And part-time work can be priced above or below a full-time day rate, depending on seniority, scope and term. Use the table to set a budget range, not to judge a single quote.
What are you paying for: fractional, interim or full-time?
The price only makes sense next to what you get. The three options solve different problems.
| Fractional CMO or head of growth | Interim CMO | Full-time CMO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time | Part-time, usually one to three days a week | Full-time, for a fixed period | Full-time, permanent |
| Best for | Senior direction and ownership without a full-time hire | Covering a vacancy or a turnaround | A large team and a long-term remit |
| How you pay | Monthly retainer or day rate | Day rate | Salary, benefits and recruitment cost |
| Commitment | Short minimum term, then monthly | The length of the assignment | Permanent contract |

How to decide what to budget
- Name the outcome first. Pipeline, positioning, a team that runs without you: the outcome sets the days, not the other way round.
- Count the days the work needs. One day a week suits direction and coaching; three suits hands-on leadership of a team.
- Agree the term. Most fractional work needs a few months before results show. Check the minimum term and notice period.
- Check what is included. Team leadership, agency management, reporting, tools and travel.
- Ask about VAT and expenses. Compare quotes on the same basis.
- Redo the sum. Days a week × day rate × 4.33 gives a monthly figure you can compare against any quote.

If you are still deciding what kind of help you need, start with the diagnosis. The Friction-to-Revenue Method sets out how I work through strategy, demand and operations, with a free scorecard. For the experience behind it, see $10M to $160M ARR, Series A to Series E: an in-house career outcome as part of the wider team, not a consulting engagement. And if a fractional role fits, the fractional head of growth page explains how the retainer works.
Frequently asked questions
Is a fractional CMO cheaper than a full-time hire?
Usually, in total cost: you pay for the days you need, with no recruitment fee and a short notice period. Per day, a fractional CMO often costs more than a salaried executive, so compare total annual cost for the same outcome, not day rates.
Do these rates include VAT?
INIMA reports day rates net of expenses and VAT, and Knab reports hourly rates excluding VAT. EO Executives does not state whether its rates include VAT. Always ask whether a quote includes VAT and expenses before comparing.
Why do rates differ so much between countries?
Rates follow national economies, the size of the interim market and the clients and sectors involved. INIMA notes that its European average has limited practical meaning because there is no "average interim" and national differences are large.
What should a fractional retainer include?
A clear set of outcomes, the number of days a week, who it leads (team, agencies, freelancers), how progress is reported, the minimum term and notice period, and whether expenses and VAT are included.
